SC you could talk for days and have my complete attention. I love the way you recount your experiences. On a separate note I have a son that was the closest to me because he went with me to work almost every day prior to him starting school. Even after he started school if I were home and on my way out the door he would tag along with me to all my appointments my clients got to know him and he had access to some amazing places. My wife and I were in a position to take the time to be involved with all his activities in and out of school. He was active in basketball, baseball, soccer, he was a sought out player by the coaches always on the starting teams. When he got older (after high school) he started to resent me and my wife thinking he was our equal. so I had to steer him straight wanting the best of everything. he was constantly giving me the well if Daniel (his brother) or Samantha (his sister) got to do something or get something he felt he was entitled to the same. After he started dating and getting serious with his girlfriend living in our house. It was time to get his own place so all the luxuries he was accustomed to he was going to have to take care of himself. He didn’t take to kindly about that and to this day we have had little or no interactions. It’s almost like he’s pouting and it’s been about 10 months and not a word from him. My wife and I are of the opinion that this is his chance to grow up and when does he’ll be back. He’s 24 years old acting like a 16 year old. And we love and miss him very much.

Great video, you are a true role model! My father (Robert Van Etten) was a great man and always looked out for neighborhood kids who were friends of mine that needed enrichment. I remember he would call from time to time and I would be guilty of hitting the FU button here and there. At this point I would empty my bank account to have one more call from him! There isn't a day that goes by that I don't miss him. I just hope DJ appreciates what he has at this point! God Bless don!

What you did for that boy is in the spirit of God. I realize you're not a religious man, and I'm not either. Any state of utmost honor, truth, and justice are the embodiment of ideals we rarely are able to attain. Sometimes we can provide it for someone else, and that's the closest to purity and eternity we humans can hope to achieve IMHO. Taking a break from binge watching the walking dead. I gotta be honest. I kind of wish that would happen in real life. I’m thinking I could do well for my family and myself in that kind of world. The show caught me attention because that was the name of my first duty station in the Marine Corp. 1/9 the walking dead. Another good show for anyone out there is Ozark on Netflix. Great great show. I'm a believer of the good deeds come back around eventually. Special attention to kids is doubled I believe. I was a little league guy. I loved watching kids go from scared shitless to damn good players as they progressed. I was always around the field when my kids were young, doing odd jobs and things that needed attention, and noone else had time for. My sons first year he had a boy raised by grandma and wanted to play but was scared of the ball. His coach asked if I could help him out,so I did. I got him aside and started teaching him to bat and field the ball as I had with my son. Hot grounders and intentional hits at bat gets rid of the fear of the ball, and increases reaction time. They soon learn it's not the end of the world to get hit by the ball.Teaching them to hit a golf ball with a broom stick improves eye to hand. Catching pop ups helped with judging distance and setting up double plays improves their sense of the finer points of the game. I could take a 9 yr old and in about a month They would be playing the infield and not stuck in right field for one inning, followed by one at bat. I always bought them a new ball for their first home run. I absolutely loved it. I even helped kids on other teams to my sons scowl. The payback of the thing was the smile as they stood on first base or caught that first high fly....priceless. When I stopped doing this,it was because of the parents,not the kids. The last year at the banquet they gave me a plack and written on it was this. Thanks Mr Ed from all of us "one inning players" I still get people come up to me grown now and get reminded how I taught them how to play baseball. It was fun while it lasted. And worth every dime I spent doing it. The funny part about it was I taught every one of those kids to bunt the ball before they learned how to hit the long ball. A kid that can bunt the ball at 9 yrs old is a real threat. If he does connect it's usually over everyone's head for a double. The pitcher is now confused what to do with that little squirt next time at bat. No more "easy out" bullshit.

Wow! I can relate to this story as my son (now 33) was hit with his first cancer at 19 and then again a couple of years later. What a horrible ride. Never did I regret before that taking him to Hawaii over a dozen times taking every scuba course he could. I’m now still blessed with his presence, a daughter in law and a grandson. So, good for you in showing compassion with a caring heart to the young man you described. Wow!

Well said about Seal toughness. I would have said it but wouldn't want to offend. People in SpecOps are blessed by nature. Like pro ballplayers. A kid with cancer was a perfect example. The kids always tore me up the worst. How about a single mom with four kids and working two jobs? There are thousands of examples of ordinary people who face mountains every day. Many times for the rest of their lives and with no encouragement. "Just cold water and a long walk". For a 21 year old, full of natures best hot shot juice. that can whip out 30 pull ups and 100 push ups all day long and is without fear? Indeed. Piece of cake. I take my hat off to you for what you said. It's a tough world ain't it? Toughest for the weak. For the strong, the top elite. the world is a trip to Disneyland.

Senior,what a heartfelt story.I am one of those cancer kids.I lost my leg to bone cancer mid femur when I was barely seven.It sucked.1966.I to this will to this day,and always will, support all that have and will those those children to this terrible disease.Thank you Don and Diane.Thank you all that help support fighting Cancer.I will never quit! I went to live a full life.Earned my way as a heavy equipment operator.Was requsted for many jobs all over the state,And for some of my smart ass friends,no I did not drive around in circles!
