These days the AAD is an Airtec CYPRES2 or similar (Vigil or Mars M2) . In each of these the electronic unit with battery is at the bottom of the reserve tray and the reserve closing loop is threaded through a cutter. An electrically triggered pyrotechnic charge actuates the cutting blade. It self arms on the ride up and if you are low and falling fast it cuts your reserve closing loop initiating reserve deployment.
