I usually ignore suspicious characters, but I couldn't resist diplomatically rattling the cages of two on Facebook. One I think was likely legit, though one of his photo's told an odd story: a USMC Sergeant in the 1990's with a CAR, GCM, NDSM, and an SSDR, but no unit awards and no expeditionary or campaign medals. Where did the CAR come from? I gave him the benefit of the doubt, as I remember the Corps dragging their feet on the AFEM for DS/DS. Formal campaign medals came out a few years later, though unit awards flourished pretty quick, especially among 1 MarDiv units. Also, he had plenty of Kuwait and Iraq photo's that undeniably showed him there.
The second guy...well...He was a lulu! An apparent member of the "Rainbow Brigade" based on some of his public posts, a retired judge and a retired Navy Commander (Mustang) who was a prior Marine in Vietnam for one enlistment. (What a goofy photo of him there as a Corporal! He did NOT look like a field Marine!) He boasted of multiple CAR's, though he wore only one in a recent photo taken well after he retired, and he had no CAR in his post Vietnam commissioned officer photo (he wore his other USMC awards). None of his active duty or reserve dress uniform photo's showed him sporting a CAR. His Vietnam Service Medal grew a few extra campaign stars over the years.
Neither of the two responded to me (no biggie).
A few other random veterans jumped in to challenge my concerns. It ended better than expected, since I deal in facts and not emotional mudslinging.
What had initially drawn my attention to these two was their bragging over the Navy and Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon while putting other veterans down for lesser awards.
I've never seen anyone who has truly been in the soup do that to other veterans, especially not legitimate recipients of combat decorations higher than a CAR. It's almost always the surface level scabs who wear a CAR because their boat was blanket awarded. They are not scabs because of the blanket award but because of how they puff up on everyone else. If you rate because of a blanket award, then it's legit, and it is something to be proud of! But man, these dudes who act like every other veteran is beneath them because of a CAR or a CIB, especially when their public online posts suggest something is "off" about their claims...

Navy pilots flying over the red sea were shot down in an apparent 'friendly fire' incident, the US military said.
The US military was conducting airstrikes targeting Yemen's Houthi rebels and mistakenly hit two US Navy pilots.
Both were recovered alive, with one suffering minor injuries. 'The guided missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, which is part of the USS Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group mistakenly fired on and hit the F/A-18, which was flying off the USS Harry S. Truman,' Central Command said in a statement.

I usually ignore suspicious characters, but I couldn't resist diplomatically rattling the cages of two on Facebook. One I think was likely legit, though one of his photo's told an odd story: a USMC Sergeant in the 1990's with a CAR, GCM, NDSM, and an SSDR, but no unit awards and no expeditionary or campaign medals. Where did the CAR come from? I gave him the benefit of the doubt, as I remember the Corps dragging their feet on the AFEM for DS/DS. Formal campaign medals came out a few years later, though unit awards flourished pretty quick, especially among 1 MarDiv units. Also, he had plenty of Kuwait and Iraq photo's that undeniably showed him there.
The second guy...well...He was a lulu! An apparent member of the "Rainbow Brigade" based on some of his public posts, a retired judge and a retired Navy Commander (Mustang) who was a prior Marine in Vietnam for one enlistment. (What a goofy photo of him there as a Corporal! He did NOT look like a field Marine!) He boasted of multiple CAR's, though he wore only one in a recent photo taken well after he retired, and he had no CAR in his post Vietnam commissioned officer photo (he wore his other USMC awards). None of his active duty or reserve dress uniform photo's showed him sporting a CAR. His Vietnam Service Medal grew a few extra campaign stars over the years.
Neither of the two responded to me (no biggie).
A few other random veterans jumped in to challenge my concerns. It ended better than expected, since I deal in facts and not emotional mudslinging.
What had initially drawn my attention to these two was their bragging over the Navy and Marine Corps Combat Action Ribbon while putting other veterans down for lesser awards.
I've never seen anyone who has truly been in the soup do that to other veterans, especially not legitimate recipients of combat decorations higher than a CAR. It's almost always the surface level scabs who wear a CAR because their boat was blanket awarded. They are not scabs because of the blanket award but because of how they puff up on everyone else. If you rate because of a blanket award, then it's legit, and it is something to be proud of! But man, these dudes who act like every other veteran is beneath them because of a CAR or a CIB, especially when their public online posts suggest something is "off" about their claims...
