I had to have my dad sign my enlistment papers also, being as I was 17 and still in high school. I went to boot camp (San Diego) after graduation in 1977.

I had a great dad also. I miss him terribly.

Really enjoyed this…sometimes we need to remember all the influences on our lives as my Dad passed about 10 years ago and while he was tough on his 6 kids, he (and my Mom) really influenced us to be as good as we could be. Thanks for sharing your story Don!

What a fantastic story about a loving father. My father sounds a lot like yours. He was poor but by hard work became a doctor and yes he bought a farm and yes worked our butts off! Great memories!

Great story Don and a vivid example of what a real man is As a note we always encourage families to visit the cockpit and take pictures.
Who knows how many of them caught the bug and became aviators.

They have tried to steal our joy but we still are holding on to the one place we can still share the awe.

Me and grandpa around the same age. He was a medic and served in Korea right after the armistice was signed. My first duty station was the JSA on the DMZ. Funny how things work out sometimes.
Seeing that marksman rifle badge still irritates me. They really should have given us more rifle time before we had to qual.

The end of the video almost put me in some tears. It relates to me, as it does to you,      and as it does to every man when his father goes. Got me to thinking, I don't think I've ever shared my stories of growing up and how or why I joined the Navy. Much like you, I just decided there wasn't anything for me at home after high school. 3 days after graduation I was in Boot Camp.

I am reminded of the phrase, something like, "losing a parent is like losing a library" - all those life memories and experiences are gone or fade as time moves on.

I lost my Dad on August 11, 2021. He was a retired North Carolina State Trooper. I miss him so much. Thank you, Senior Chief for sharing your memories.

Don, Shipmate.....than YOU so much for sharing your life/soul. It means so much to me. I also joined the Navy at age 17 or five days after I turned 17. You did good. It took me awhile to grow up in the Navy but in those days they gave you room to grow. I am so fortunate they did. As a result I made Chief before I retired. So glad you made Senior Chief. Be proud my shipmate.

Your dad was a breed that I dont think we'll ever see again. My dad was much the same and I lost him when he was only 65. Miss him dearly. Not because I dont know the answer to my questions, but because he was always the calm in stormy waters. Some amazing generations of people back then.

A wonderful tribute to your father, Don. I miss mine too. He was 82nd Airborne in the 50's and a private/commercial rated pilot as a hobby. Always knew the answers...Thanks for sharing.

My father was a flight engineer on c130s in Rota Spain... I used to love flying with him.. especially when the old hercy bird would break... We too would experience low approaches over base housing upon return of a crew...really cool! Very similar upbringings. 

Don, I commend you for honoring your Mother and Father the way you do. My God says you should honor your Mother and Father. You do that and I admire you for that. I have seen kids put down their parents. BAD ju ju and for no good reason. God bless you don and diane.

After listening to DJ on Shawn Ryan's show and your two great videos Don, I had a lot of emotion's come up. For a few minutes I would like to set aside all of what I just listened to. Being a woman, wife and Mother I need to give a shout out to Diane, Patsy and Dons Mom... I have nothing but respect for the three of you being the Strong women that you are.

My grandfather did guns for Christmas for me the oldest every year then we past them down to other grandchildren but i still have the 303 british an SKS with bayonet and my favorite the Remington 870 pump duck edition. Thanks for the kick ass update Senior

Good talk Don. Memories were stired up a bit thinken about My Dad.
We had different opinions and I started My life.
The way things turned out is great. I could not have plotted a better course because I am real happy about even the smallest things.
I dont think My Dad ever had it this good.

My parents were 'the silent generation', born in the 30's. Three boys in my family and my dad never did shit with any of us. My sister was the princess. I used that experience in a positive way when I raised my own two sons. They call me when they have questions or need advice. I never had that w/ my own father. In and of itself, that was a valuable lesson for me. I joined the Navy for the exact same reasons you did. The youngest of four and I didn't want to hang around and do nothing like my siblings. So I got the fuck out. One of the best decisions of my life.

Holy crap...Don...write a book...this is rich stuff.

I didn't know you were related to me!. Your story is quite familiar to me. My grandfather and your father must have been friends or something. This is as if you were relaying my life story. Work for what you want, a boy without responsibility is a waste of humanity. Hunting ,fishing, and my grandfather was the one that I went to when I wanted to join the Navy. He was as proud as a man can get when I went to my first submarine. (As an undesignated seaman) My parents were stunned when I wanted to join, my grandfather just told me to give it 100% or don't join. Maybe it's the way they were raised I don't know. That generation passed on allot of knowlege, as long as you were willing to use your 2 ears and not your mouth. It's a common joke in my family,to never ask Dad the answer to anything, because he won't tell you the answer ,but he will help you to find it. Great video Don. Brought back allot of fond memories
