Well now… Big Red’s in the kitchen fixin’ up the New Year’s spread, shakin’ her head and swearin’ up and down that collard greens only ended up a Southern tradition after the War of Northern Aggression. Says them damned Yankees tromped through our fields, cleaned out the larder, and left us with nothin’ but grit, grit, and a stubborn patch of greens.
But bless her heart, she cooks ’em the same way every year anyway—low and slow, seasoned with memory, pride, and just enough defiance to remind anyone sittin’ at the table that the South may bend, but it sure as sugar never forgets.

Mom has to work New Year's, so were at Hef's for the countdown. Hef passed out long before the countdown. He's had a few, he was responsibly sure his phone wouldn't be ringing on New Year's Eve, even though he's on call tonight. We're hoping he's right, all the sleeping pills we crushed up and put in his whiskey seem to be working. Now we have the green light to take his ride for a nice little road tour. Gotta start the New Year off with a bang...

My older Marine brother was born in 1949. He has big holes in his memory now but for whatever reason he decided to start talkin bout his time in the Corps for the first time. He cant remember what his PLT nbr was and he was the guide who carried the guidon with the number and he doesnt remember what month he graduated. He does remember staff NCO's and friends he served with. He had just returned to camp Pendleton and picked me up when i graduated. He took me down to his boat pool and showed me around and introduced me to his 1stSgt. he doesnt remember any of that today.
