You just posted this below. Yes the SF claim is BS, as there is only one Special Forces and that is Army GB's and they are part of Special Operations GROUP that form into what is called ODA and ODA (direct support teams that have SF and special trained support)
Now so you know the Navy has NSW (Naval Special Warfare) these are SEAL and SWCC and direct Combat and Combat Service Support teams. Then you have NSO Navy Special Operations, these our Divers and EOD,also the Sea SAR swimmers that jump from bird's to rescue people. So you can run into a guy that claim he was Navy Special Operations, but not be a SEAL.
Also after 2003 Navy had officers mostly Intel types that served on operational teams that could get NSWO (Naval Special Warfare Officer) but they are not SEAL's or BUD's qulafied, can say they NSWO, but not SEAL,'s.
I would say you ran into a fake, but do not assume he is not trained in other things.
There are also guys that have identy issues, like EOD guys because they work with all kind of SOF forces, and have to have same tactical training that most SOF guys receive example Dive training, Jump school, CQB and MOUT and some combative training like MCMAP (Marine Corps Martial Arts Program) most if these real guys will say not a SEAL, but.
