As a boy i watched a cat snatch up a squealing baby rabbit and run off with it. I put the remaining 3 in a box that i hid in my bedroom. Mom found them one day so Pa helped me build a cage for them outside. At night id fall asleep at my window keepin watch on them. One night i see that cat sittin by the cage so i go out run the cat off and climb into the cage and sleep with the rabbits. Me mother was not happy when i turned up missin the next morning.

The idea that you give an animal a safe place to come back to (like putting a perch outside the window and leaving a window open) is sometimes called "limited release". 

I've never hear of it done with a song bird and it probably wouldn't work with those cats around.
