It's funny how I enjoy these videos since some can be funny, entertaining, informative, etc. But at the same time, some can be hard to watch like this one. I just cannot wrap my head around how some folks can be so naïve and be duped into believing some stuff. I had a coworker ask me some questions about the Army since I'm an Army vet. I answered them, and asked why she wanted to know (some were pretty off the wall questions). She said one of her best friends is talking to a guy online and he's a soldier overseas. I asked if they had the "one" picture of him he sent. She asked how I knew it was only one, and I just smirked. She showed me it and yea, it's a picture of a soldier, with a totally photoshopped paper in his hand with the gal's name that he's talking to that says "I love you". How someone cannot tell that's photoshopped (I mean, they used a right hand for his left hand (thumb is on the wrong friggin side!)) is just amazing to me. I then asked how much money is he asking for. Her jaw dropped and said he asked her to get him some gift cards. I had to pull up the US ARMY's response to some of these things and gave it to her. Some folks lie to themselves and want to believe something so much because they are so desperate to have it be true. It's just so.. disappointing? Sad? Cringe worthy? I don't even know what word or phrase to use.

One of the things people do when grieving after the loss of a loved one, is that try to capture something that the deceased held, touched, used, and it can be merely a pair of boots r shoes, a sofa, coffeemaker, pocket watch, just some little trivial thing, what when they touch or use it, connects them back to the person who is no longer with them.

When a military phoney dies, and they leave loved ones behind, those who are left often try to take the fiction that was foisted on them, and fruitlessly try to "prove" the lies were really true, and often spend decade digging into records and trying to get anybody to give them any information that will prove that the deceased was actually a hero who was telling the truth. It is a sign of grieving, and we need to help them by bringing the truth to them so that they can literally move on with their lives. Otherwise, they get stuck in an endless loop of trying to convert the lie into a delusionary truth, which will force a clinical disconnect from reality, and their mental health will become dangerously twisted.

But, this debunking needs to be gently performed, but with firmness, and a certain level of courtesy, and the survivor needs to be told the difference between the truth, a "war story" exaggeration, a blatant lie, and the difference between these things and stolen valor. The kindest thing overall is to give them a mini-lesson on stolen valor, and just how offensive it is to veterans, ALL veterans. Then, walked them gently back to talk about a blatant lie, then exaggerations, and then finally talk to them about the truth. This is called "continuum of deception" and then talk to the survivor about why people will lie about their military expereince, and how a lie might evolve as a person self-image breaks down and they endlessly embellish to cover up a bad run in the military, or in their civilian life.

If someone served on active duty, in the military, they will most likely have served honorably and they and their family can be proud of that service, and that honor will flow down through multiple generations. It really does not matter how glorious their service was, nor does it matter or what they did, or if they wartime or peacetime service, because the military needs someone to fill every job. But some people who served in the military, had a bad run, or they did shameful things in the military, or they had a bad self-image and they lacked honor, and this created a lot of bad paper during their military service, and quite a few of these earned time in the Brig and earned them punitive discharges.

The "gaps" often come into play when a person gets fired from a civilian position, or they get "fired" from their military positions, demoted, DD, etc. They need something to fill the vacuum between their DD and what they think they deserve, so they invent deeds, assignment,s and such to fill their void, and they create what is called an "active-endless lie" that they spend the rest of their lie adjusting, evolving, tweaking, and eventually, they build a fiction up around their life out of a really shitty self-image, and they can not live outside the lie, and they manage to get endlessly twisted up with the things in their life, and they never are capable of doing much more than just maintaining the lie, and their end up destroying everything in their life, all over their poor self-image.
