I have officially joined the "Old Coots" club today. I received my first Social Security check in my bank this morning!
I elected to take early SS at 62 after doing some spreadsheeting. My monthly check is $400 less than if I waited another 4.5 years for the full SS level. Math says a couple of things. If I waited and keeled over in the next couple of years, I get nothing. Additionally, I looked at how long it would take at full SS to overcome and recover what I will have received for the next 4.5 years at the higher rate. That would put me well into my late 70's. Just didn't make sense.
Then... the BIG surprise came when SS official was doing my interview and approval process on the phone. My son just turned 11-years-old, and I had no idea, but because I can say I'm his provider, he ALSO gets $967/mo until he turns 18 under my SS account. That's almost $80K that will come in over the next seven years, in addition to mine! CHA-CHING!!! (Thinking BOAT!)
I also elected to take it because I don't think I will be actively employed for the next few years, having to be a somewhat stay-at-home Dad for my son, and Arm Candy for my Commander Wife! I am doing some self-employment work marketing on the net, and that won't affect my SS. Only a problem if I went back to employment with a company.
Nice to have that significant extra cash! Woohoo!
