John Simpson Kirkpatrick was an English-born Australian ANZAC stretcher-bearer who, along with his donkey, became a legendary symbol of courage during the 1915 Gallipoli Campaign.

In 24 days, he rescued under direct and indirect fire over 300 wounded soldiers, transporting them from the front lines to safety at Anzac Cove. Simpson was killed on May 19, 1915 after being landed on 25 April 1915.

The famous "man with the donkey" at Gallipoli, was never awarded the Victoria Cross (VC). Despite his iconic status for rescuing over 300 wounded soldiers. The Top Brass who were British considered his actions just a part of his job.

In 2013 following a review, Simpson was denied a VC by the Australian Government citing his actions as nothing special.
