The new engine is powered by a system Dyson is calling a “Fluidic Propulsion Air Multiplier” (FPAM).
Dyson has been making bladeless fans for a few years now that accelerate a consistent stream of air without exposed blades.
The engine had been in top secret development for years after having been awarded a contract with DARPA to turn air surrounding a craft into powerful thrust capable of supersonic speeds.
It boils down to physics.
While it's true that the atmosphere is gaseous, gases obey the physical laws of fluid dynamics.
As air flows through the slits in the tube and out through the front of the fan, air behind the fan is drawn through the tube as well.
This is called inducement. The flowing air pushed by the motor induces the air behind the fan to follow.
Air surrounding the edges of the fan will also begin to flow in the direction of the breeze.
This process is called entrainment.
Through inducement and entrainment, Dyson claims the FPAM increases the output of airflow by 15,000 times the amount it takes in through the motor.
Dyson's engineers addressed the turbulence problems by integrating Helmholtz cavities into the fan's base.
If you've ever held a seashell to your ear or blown across the top of a glass bottle, you've experienced the effect of these cavities, in which sound bounces and skids across a hard surface.
Helmholtz cavities make noise, of course. Figure out exactly how these cavities work, and then you can control that noise.
By adding Helmholtz cavities of sorts into the base of the FPAM, engineers increased air pressure, and ultimately these cavities began to work as silencers.
Car manufacturers are very familiar with the principles of Helmholtz cavities.
They manipulate them to their advantage when quieting exhaust systems.
In the case of the FPAM, engineers basically tuned the cavities to specifically mute sounds in the range of 1,000 Hertz, which humans tend to find especially aggravating.
There's no question that the FPAM is a striking technological innovation.

I am NOT a "Hair club for men" type. Never was. Hell, I had a visible bald spot when I was 14. By my 20's I had just accepted it; I was NOT going to be known for my "Good Hair." Here's my great-uncle JB. He was KIA on Iwo Jima. He was good friends with Tex Ritter, was possibly his trick rider stunt double, was an accomplished trick horse rider, and quite the ladies' man. I'm certain some of the nude pics of different ladies in his photo album were actresses at the time. I have no idea who they are and neither of my uncles know who the various women are. I have all of the pictures he took during the 1930s. I also have his 1894 Winchester 30-30. It's still in firing condition. In this pic are his mother and one of his sisters in front of their home in Tulare, CA. Prior to relocating to CA, they lived in the now ghost town of Dozier, TX.

I am NOT a "Hair club for men" type. Never was. Hell, I had a visible bald spot when I was 14. By my 20's I had just accepted it; I was NOT going to be known for my "Good Hair." It seems like EVERY attempt to fake hair fails miserably. Not so with tits!! I have seen some fake tit jobs that would make your knees buckle. Just SO goddam perfect you cannot WAIT to wrap your paws around those monsters. The trick seems to be not going TOO big. You want to go as big as is reasonable for YOU. As big as is advisable for YOUR BODY type. Yes, many years back I advised(unofficially of course) on fake tits, and how big to go, and I have not ALWAYS said: TRIPLE E BABY!" You have GOT to be REASONABLE!!! I know a girl who was 105 pounds soaking wet, and she went with B+, and MY LORD were they PERFECT!! They look BIG on her, and they are perfect for her body; of course that was 25 years ago. I have to say that Don's hair piece is the "World Class fake tits" of the hair community. Now Don was able to go big, double D plus, but he is able to carry that big rack hairdo. If I thought I was going to walk out of the TOUPE SHACK with THAT show stopper finish Don is sporting, then yeah, I'd probably have done it. Problem is, its a roll of the dice. I have seen them go bad, and when a fake tit job goes bad, it goes REAL BAD. You know what I mean, you end up with one huntin and one passed out on the porch; its a fucking nightmare. Don's do is TOP SHELF work. He refuses to divulge the wizard that set him up; and I get that. I mean if you are a hot girl that God forgot to put nice tits on, and you find a Doc who corrects this in a manner that cries out: "GOD TITTIES," you DO NOT share that info. To hell with helping him land more clients; no sense in having to stand in line at the gas station with a bunch of gals who all have a perfect set of chew toys, you know? So I get it, if I had hair like that, I would not tell ANYONE where I got it! I can't remember now how I got on hair and titties, but that never stops me from commenting.

Here's my great-uncle JB. He was KIA on Iwo Jima. He was good friends with Tex Ritter, was possibly his trick rider stunt double, was an accomplished trick horse rider, and quite the ladies' man. I'm certain some of the nude pics of different ladies in his photo album were actresses at the time. I have no idea who they are and neither of my uncles know who the various women are. I have all of the pictures he took during the 1930s. I also have his 1894 Winchester 30-30. It's still in firing condition.
In this pic are his mother and one of his sisters in front of their home in Tulare, CA. Prior to relocating to CA, they lived in the now ghost town of Dozier, TX.
