How would anyone be able to function without him there to guide them, and protect them against any and all enemies. I found some footage of his leader ship and situational awareness at peak form. I did know one guy fairly well at my 1st duty station. He suddenly developed back pain, like a ruptured disc or something that caused a lot of pain. Having a ruptured disc where the stuff inside burst out and raised hell with nerves years later I am pretty sure his condition was real.

Back then there were no MRIs and the X-Ray didn't show it so they wanted to do exploratory surgery. He said "no" to that.
It was a long and involved process but eventually they let him out with a disability instead.

A long and involved process, apparently you have the right to say "no" to things like exploratory surgery and can keep trying to say "no" but eventually if they want to kick your ass out on a medical you're out on a medical.
