His training with the grenades was not correct. In Vietnam we would use this setup at times. The proper way was for us to use a fruit can from are C rations. Use wire to attach it to a tree or bamboo and inch or so tripwire etc. You need to take the fuse out of a smoke grenade. The smoke grenades back then had interchangeable fuses. Smoke grenade had no delayed fuse, instant bang. Old school infantry Senior Chief.
