BTW, my surgeon _was_ a neurosurgeon, he was the back surgeon of choice for the SF 49ers and other teams back in the late 80s and early 90s.
Both neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons will jump through the hoops to become qualified and practice spinal surgery as a specialty.
If something like a lumbar laminectomy is needed either can do it, look for the most recommended spinal surgeon. 

I had a ruptured disc, the stuff inside burst out and was pressing against the nerves, especially the sciatic nerve.
Because I waited years for surgery (trying things like chiropractic & physical therapy) the areas was calcified and lots of junk had to be taken out.
They can't make the whole area "like new" but they can remove a little bone around where the nerves come out to make pressure against the nerves much less likely so a lumbar laminectomy was part of the surgery. 

My more recent problems have symptoms much like what Don described but start in the post surgical area (L5-L6 for me because I have a 6th Lumbar vertebrae).
Eventually the whole lumbar region down to the hips becomes inflamed but it goes away with rest and anti-inflammatory measures.

This fucker, which put me in the hospital for 12 days.
