WASHINGTON—A U.S. special-operations unit and a contingent of Marines have been secretly operating in Taiwan to train military forces there, U.S. officials said, part of efforts to shore up the island’s defenses as concern regarding potential Chinese aggression mounts.
About two dozen members of U.S. special-operations and support troops are conducting training for small units of Taiwan’s ground forces, the officials said. The U.S. Marines are working with local maritime forces on small-boat training. The American forces have been operating in Taiwan for at least a year, the officials said.
The U.S. special-operations deployment is a sign of concern within the Pentagon over Taiwan’s tactical capabilities in light of Beijing’s yearslong military buildup and recent threatening moves against the island.

Reminds me of LAR-V Transition Course in '93 at Little Creek. Very steep learning curve, measuring distance by counting kicks and time, tactical peaks, turtle backing... that harbor was darker than inside of a cow. We had a dive team made up of an SNCO and Capt (USAF) who were a soup sandwich. Routinely we'd hear the DRS sound off "Dive team 10, you are going the wrong way" LOL! Great memories.

From the surface ship side, we used to conduct night swimmer attack drills at REFTRA in Pearl Harbor. It was a lopsided evolution favoring the ships. We knew when the drill was scheduled, usually early evening. We could see the swimmers entering the water across the bay. Deck watches were set with bright lights. And we always caught the divers. When the divers came aboard for the debrief, it was pretty clear that under more realistic conditions, we might not fare as well. Not to mention the divers were monsters, they had quads the size of tree trunks. Good luck trying to catch one.

After 36 years of safely ensuring our passengers got from point A to point B I am one of the many who despite a stellar track record of safety and compliance will be terminated come this Dec 8th.

These tactics are no different than the terrorists. Either you follow the edicts or you are terminated, permanently. I've fought too hard to stay healthy and worked as hard to be sure I could stay in the field that I fell in love with as a young boy. My Father was also in aviation and served in the Army. I glad he is not here to see what his beloved country has become.
All of these people bereft a soul need their birthdays turned off, All of them.

I have a theory that LTC Scheller may have had an ulterior motive for his actions and statements that landed him in the doghouse. He certainly got national attention and got people's anger rising...BUT he clearly knew that he would be in big trouble and I am a little suspicious of his true motives.
Specifically, it turns out that he doesn't only have a bitch about the Afghanistan fiasco, but is also a hard-core anti-Trumper and has totally trashed Gen Flynn and others.
Here's my theory and what I think may be at play.
He'll be court martialed and kicked out with a dishonorable.
He will then get massive media attention and he'll be a regular "guest" on every MSM show, which will give him the opportunity to further trash Trumpers and Leftists he doesn't like.
He will then announce he is running for office and those who have been bamboozled by him will dash to support him. This may have been a well-planned move on his part, and some are regretting having sent donations to support him and his family after his latest diatribe. Many are asking for their donations back from the Organization that set up a way for people to "help".

I may be totally off-base, but let's see how this actually plays out. I'm betting we will see him in a campaign for 2022...just don't know on what side or where.

under water navigation isn't for everyone. It takes a lot of practice and enjoyed Seniors explanations. I did recreationally diving for a few years. I always struggled counting kicks and maintaining a heading. Really came home to roast on a trip to a place named Tobermory known for diving 1812 warship wrecks. My first night time dive and was boogying right along counting kicks trying to follow the compass. Surfaced 20 minutes or so later and all I could see were chem lights about 250 yards in the opposite direction. Pucker factor went up a notch. I can just image as Don was telling the stories what it was like under those conditions and the price of failure

Pretty interesting insight Senior. I'm not sure I could do it, but understand a little of the discipline. Land nav was on thing that I was very good at. Combat swimming has way more variables and way too many things that would question your actual position.

Great video Senior. Reminds me so much of land nav where your talking about your kicks to determine how far you swam.
We used a cord with Ranger beads to keep our pace count, every 100 meters you move a bead with your pace count until you hit the point then reset your beads and start off on your next objective.
