Lost my dad 3 years ago. I'm glad he didn't have to see what's happening today in this country.

He was born dirt poor in eastern Ohio in a small mining town. He played High School football, and ended up being recruited by Woody Hayes on his mothers front porch who was at the time head coach at the University of Miami in Ohio. When they got there, my dad said Woody went down the line, and basically assigned a military alternating down the line. Pops got Air Force, and joined ROTC. They had a good season, and ended up beating ASU in the Salad Bowl in 1951. Bo Schembechler was a tackle on the team.

He graduated and entered the Air Force, and was sent to flight school, and graduated. During the interim of waiting for a slot for B-52 training, he was assigned as a maintenance officer in BumFuck Glascow Mt. During a routine parts run, he had to punch out of a T-33 near Minneapolis in a thunderstorm. The ejection seat crushed two of his lower vertebrates, and the wind force tore his helmet off. He was pelted with hail the whole way down. A couple picnicking two weeks later found his helmet, and sent it back to him.

He then completed B-52 pilot training, and was stationed at Ramey AFB Puerto Rico where I was born to fly Chrome Dome missions on the west side of Europe with nukes, usually through the straight, and up the boot of Italy. After 3 years he was stationed at Wurstsmith AFB in Michigan where this photo was taking 67-68-ish. Pop's is in the back row left, co-pilot, nav, gunner. Note the chevrons. Front left, EWO, and Radar Nav which looks like a Major. Rank doesn't matter on Planes just like ships in the Navy. A/C, or Capt rules. There's an H model in the background.

He spent his time there on alert 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off. The 2 weeks off were flying rotating 24 hour race track patterns armed with nukes over the arctic from Alaska to Greenland. You didn't leave until another bird came up, and relieved you. I spent many of holidays at the alert shack including Christmas opening presents.

He then spent the year of 1970 flying out of U-Tapau Thailand flying the old D models dropping conventional bombs over Vietnam. 71 his flying days were over, and started being Squadron Commanders at Castle AFB in Merced Cali, down to Dyess AFB, and up to SAC Hdq were he retired in 83 as Lt Commander of the MSET team. A maintenance inspection team that would travel to Air Force bases unannounced, and inspect the maintenance facilities.

Looks like Seniors dad, and upbringing came from the same mold. They don't make men like this anymore.
