On the third day, the Army issued him a jock strap. The Army has been looking for Herman for 51 years.

Shaver was born in Corsicana, Texas, and raised by his mother, Victory Watson Shaver. Until he was 12, he spent a great deal of time with his grandmother in Corsicana, so his mother could work in Waco. He sometimes accompanied his mother to her job at a local nightclub, where he was first exposed to country music.[5]

Shaver's mother remarried about the time that his grandmother died, and Shaver and his older sister Patricia moved in with their mother and new stepfather. Shaver left school after the eighth grade to help his uncles pick cotton, but occasionally returned to school to play sports.[6]

Shaver joined the U.S. Navy on his 17th birthday.[7] Upon his discharge, he worked a series of dead-end jobs, including trying to be a rodeo clown.[8] About this time, he met and married Brenda Joyce Tindell. They had one son, John Edwin, known as Eddy, who was born in 1962. The two divorced and remarried several times.[6]

Shaver took a job at a lumber mill to make ends meet. One day, his right (dominant) hand became caught in the machinery, and he lost the better part of two fingers and contracted a serious infection. He eventually recovered, and taught himself to play the guitar without the missing fingers.[6]


Shaver lost two fingers in a sawmill accident when he was young.[1]
Shaver set out to hitchhike to Los Angeles. He could not get a ride west, so he went to the other side of the highway and headed east, accompanying a man who dropped him off just outside Memphis, Tennessee. The next ride brought him to Nashville, where he found a job as a songwriter for $50 per week.[5] His work came to the attention of Waylon Jennings, who filled most of his album Honky Tonk Heroes with Shaver's songs after meeting in a travel trailer at Willie Nelson's 4 July picnic. Other artists, including Elvis Presley and Kris Kristofferson, began to record Shaver's music. This led to him getting his own record deal.

The first few recording companies he signed with soon folded.[5] He was never able to gain widespread recognition as a singer, although he never stopped recording his own music. On his records, he has been accompanied by other major rock and country musicians such as Willie Nelson, Nanci Griffith, Chuck Leavell and Dickey Betts (of the Allman Brothers), Charlie Daniels, Flaco Jiménez, and Al Kooper.

After losing his wife, Brenda, and his mother to cancer in 1999, Shaver lost his son and longtime guitarist Eddy Shaver, who died at age 38 on December 31, 2000. The listed cause of death was a heroin overdose, but there were suspicious circumstances surrounding the case as his face was bruised as if he had been punched multiple times, and the daughter of an Austin police officer was at the residence at the time. Folk country artist Todd Snider wrote and dedicated his song "Waco Moon" to Eddy. Shaver nearly died the following year when he had a heart attack on stage during an Independence Day show at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas. After successful heart surgery, Shaver came back to release Freedom's Child in 2002.

In 1999, Shaver performed at the Grand Ole Opry. In November 2005, he performed on the CMT Outlaws in 2005. In 2006, Shaver was inducted in the Texas Country Music Hall of Fame. He later served as spiritual advisor to Texas independent gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman. For his efforts, the Americana Music Convention awarded him their Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting.[9] He lived in Waco, Texas.

Bob Dylan mentioned Shaver in his song "I Feel a Change Comin' On" (Bob Dylan and Robert Hunter) on the album, Together Through Life (2009) – "I'm listening to Billy Joe Shaver, And I'm reading James Joyce". Shaver is also the "hero" of the song, "Why Can't I Write Like Billy Joe" on the album Stormy Love by Bugs Henderson.

Shaver's voice is heard on the themes to the Adult Swim television show Squidbillies. The opening themes are only a stanza long and end with a sotto voce spoken-word portion. Season 1 Episode 5 of Mike Judge's Tales From The Tour Bus features the life of Shaver.

A brown bear was captured on camera scarfing down little ducklings in front of screaming children at a zoo in Seattle last week.

The two-year-old bear, named Juniper, devoured the ducks while several children cried and smacked the glass to distract her at the Woodland Park Zoo.

The video begins with Juniper patiently watching the mother duck and her five baby ducklings by the pond.
She then plunged into her bear pond, going straight for the ducks, grabbing and biting the fluffy ducklings one after another.
She can be seen biting the ducks' heads off and slurping them down before finally going after the mama duck.

Fixed my neighbors garage door opener today. She's white but was married to a nice black guy until he died of cancer. I help when I can, now that I'm slowing up. Her sons friend was watching and asked her son about the white guy fixing the door.. Sounded allot like why are you letting this white guy in here to begin with. Her son is 6' 5 or better. and he lit into him with a lecture about living together that I've never heard. The friend left and after I finished we had a beer and he apologized all over himself. Being raised on a ranch in the Calif. outback, I have always followed the western  life style, be it ranching, rodeo or just plain old country folks. This post from TRACES of TEXAS came up on my memories today and felt compelled to pass it on. It is more than just a blurry old polaroid snapshot, it is a mans personal keepsake.
As I've said umpteen times, sometimes it's not the photo, but the story. Traces of Texas reader Jim Bob Sims kindly sent in this snapshot and, when I first opened up his email and looked at it I thought that I wouldn't post it because, technically, it leaves some stuff to be desired: clarity, colors, noise etc... Then I read Jim Bob's caption:
"This is a very poor quality photo... probably a snapshot of an old Polaroid. But it is the only picture I have of me, my brother, and my dad all together. This was taken west of Happy, TX on the family place probably sometime in 1965. My dad, Wendell, died of a heart attack on July 3, 1971. My brother, Wendy, was killed in an auto accident on April 22, 1978. Besides the fact that it is the only picture I have of us together, the other things I love about this picture are the headache rack on the pickup, the hat creases of my dad and brother, the Pall Mall in daddy’s hand, and the rain gauge nailed to the top of the fence post behind us. It all takes me back to a simpler time.
I don’t really expect you to post this photo, I guess I’m just reminiscing and you’re the lucky recipient of my memories tonight. My brother’s death anniversary was just a few days ago… 45 years, and my dad will have been gone 52 years come July.
They still have a roping in Happy every year, the Wesley-Sims Memorial Roping. The Wesley part is in memory of Bowie Wesley from Happy (Wayside). He was RCA Rookie of the Year in 1968. He was killed in an auto accident in Montana in 1970 traveling between rodeos. The Sims part of it is in memory of my dad. He loved to rope steers. We spent many Sunday afternoons roping with Tuffy Thompson who had a place just south and east of Happy. Tuffy was a 2-time World Champion Steer Roper. "
Jim Bob's words put a lump in my throat, and I realized that I couldn't live with myself if I didn't post this. I also pondered how there are things that we possess that have intense meanings to ourselves and only ourselves. Just yesterday I read a story about a letter that Marilyn Monroe sent to Joe Dimaggio, to whom she was married for a time. The letter was found in Joe's wallet after he passed away. It had been folded into four sections and was so badly creased and had been opened and refolded so many times that it's practically in four sections. And I thought about Joe Dimaggio, one of the most famous people in America, keeping that letter in his wallet and opening it up from time to time and reading it. And I realized that even Joltin' Joe Dimaggio no doubt had regrets, lost loves that he mourned, a private inner life that nobody else could fathom.
Of course, when you're not famous, nobody really cares about your stuff when you're gone. There are things on my desk right now that were given to me by friends who have passed away. I'm surrounded by them and haunted by their memories. But their special meaning is known to me and to me alone. Whoever is tasked with cleaning up after I pass away won't know about those special meanings. To them it's just stuff to be given away or thrown away and yet, to me, it's everything.

I am here taking care of my 91 year old father in law while my wife and daughter are up there in Massachusetts. He needs me to help with everything. Showers...cooking...everything. Even walking. It's just us guys here and we have a great time though living like a couple of batchelors. Being a member here and sharing Dons videos got my father in law to talk about his time in Korea (1953-55), but he goes out of his way to tell everyone that he served right after the war. He doesn't want people to mistake his service and take valor away from those who were in combat.
