Should I Completely Shave My Dog?

The simple answer is NO (for double-coated dog owners).

You may be planning to shave your dog for the summer. Just like other dog owners, your thought must be, shaving will make the dog cool.

But, this isn’t true.

Shaving will not make your dog cool. By completely shaving off, your dog will be losing its coats. It will reduce the natural abilities of your dog to cool down.

For double-coated dog breeds, it is not recommended to shave. Double coated dog breeds have two layers of hair for protection from the atmosphere.

It will not just reduce the natural abilities, but it will also result in the changes in textures of coats and it may also irritate the dog.
Why double-coated dogs should not be shaved?

Here are some disadvantages of shaving the dog:

Shaving can’t cool down
Changes in coats textures
May cause irritation
Sunburns
Increases skin cancer risks
The fur gets damaged
It will not decrease shedding

What dog breeds should not be shaved?

As we have seen, double-coated dog breeds should not be shaved. Doing so will ruin the dog’s ability to cool down.

Malamutes
Golden Retrievers
Border Collies
Aussie Shepherds

I'm not sure about other dogs but I know of two times Gunner had patches of hair that took a long time to grow back. The first was from the first time I gave him a mohawk and accidentally shaved him almost down to the skin in one spot. It took around a year to grow back. The second was when I shut the front door on his tail a few months back. It's getting close to being filled in now but it was bald for a while.
