For those interested you can get a VA Pre-Need Eligibility Determination for National Cemeteries. It doesn't apply to Arlington National Cemetery which has its own set of rules. This can help speed up the process when dealing with a funeral home. It didn't take that long to get one. Below is the VA website to use. va.gov/burials-memorials/eligibility

Had to go to the mall today, needed to pick up some cleaning supplies. As I was entering the mall the para transport bus was dropping a group off at the mall entrance. There was about 8 or 9 in the group, all using wheelchairs. So I held the door for them as they entered the mall. Got to the last one in the procession, she looks at me and smiles. She says it must be your lucky day, you got the convoy. I just laughed and wished her a good day. She thanked me and went on her way. She had a great attitude, made my day.

While the preferred method is to have documentation the alternative method is "a flag may be issued when a statement is made by a person of established character and reputation that he/she personally knows the deceased to have been a veteran who meets the eligibility criteria".
So it's possible there was a communication problem in the discussion with the funeral director, the applicant should first be asked if there is a readily available document. .
Funeral directors are supposed to know how to deal with this, the guy shouldn't have been left with the impression that he couldn't have the flag element of the funeral if he didn't run around getting the documentation himself.
I am still sort of curious how many folks get "a flag" and not "the free flag". Funerals are so expensive anyway that putting in a "not free flag" is no big deal. One can also imagine the next of kin demanding "I want that flag! The VA flag, the one my father earned with his service!!1". Once again funeral directors are supposed to know how do deal with this and potentially difficult clients.

I'd be curious to know just how far back Joe's shadiness goes ?? He's been in politics over 50 years, I would like to hope at one time his moral compass was pointing in the right direction.

Was there a form from 1946 that was similar to a DD-214? I found a certificate from my dad that basically just said that he was honorably discharged but there's no list of ships or ribbons. Would there have been another that I should keep looking for?
